Another great event in Delaware on the coast!  This year, Sandy Fulton’s Boo B Que brought over 70 teams to the Delaware shore for Boo B Que!

The weather was decent this year, and a lot of fun was had by all with the annual Friday night Halloween celebration.  A lot of the teams decorated which made for a fantasticly festive atmosphere.
The winds blew in on Saturday morning making for a challenging cooking environment.  But that sure didn’t slow down 3Eyz BBQ who won Grand Champion honors, with Aporkalypse now taking RGC.
Also, a huge congratulations to the Gunter Wilhelm DE MABA Cup Champion Hog Street Bullies.  Great job Brian Reamer!  We look forward to seeing you at BBQ Gives Back in March!

The 3rd annual New Castle Colonial BBQ Competition was hosted June 8th and 9th in historic downtown New Castle, Delaware. Set on the Delaware River, in the beautiful New Castle Battery Park, the event was held in conjunction with the town’s annual “Separation Day” festival. The celebration, which takes place in the “First State’s” first official capital, recognizes Delaware’s declaration of independence from Pennsylvania on June 15th, 1776.

As has been the case the previous two years, we had fantastic weather on Friday and most of the day Saturday. Big crowds filled the park and the streets for the two-day event while enjoying live music, craft beer, food trucks, rides, and even a petting zoo. Forty-two professional teams competed as well as several backyard teams and a big congratulations goes to all of those who heard their names called.

A huge congratulations goes to Sauced! BBQ Team, who received four top-ten’s and took home RGC.

The biggest congratulations goes to Checkered Flag 500 BBQ for earning three top-ten calls and walking away with GC. Great job Mark and Sharon!

The New Castle Colonial BBQ Competition has become a favorite for competitors since its inception three years ago and a big thank you goes to Sandy Fulton and her family for once again organizing a great event. A thank you also goes out to all the volunteers, New Castle residents, sponsors, and teams who helped make the event possible.

  3. FAQue – Get to Know Delaware Team Big D’s BBQ

By Amy Overbey, MABA Board Member, the Princess of Poultry, and Co-Pitmaster of Team Meat Coma

WHO IS ON THE TEAM AND WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

David Deal (Big D) from Wilmington, Delaware
John Brown (Johnny B) from Lewes, Delaware

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN COMPETING?

Our first competition was in Dover in October 2008 where we finished middle of the pack. The following year we competed in Dover again (Nor’easter/pitmaster episode) where we finished again middle of the pack but with a first place chicken, we were hopelessly hooked forever.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR TEAM NAME/LOGO?

We originally competed as The Delaware Blue Hogs, however since Dave owned and operated Big D’s BBQ in Marshallton Delaware we decided to change our name to help promote the business. Of course this was risky, because if we sucked at it ……well you get the idea. The current logo is used at the BBQ business, however we are currently redesigning it to better serve both the business and the team.

WHAT SMOKER(S) DO YOU COOK ON?

We have used everything from a weber kettle to Drum smokers and competed for several years with a Backwoods Competitor. We have been using a Peoria Custom Cooker stick burner since 2013 because we love the flavor that stick burners provide and we have no interest in getting any sleep at a comp…..LOL

IF YOU COULD ADD A 5TH CATEGORY, AND IT CAN BE ANYTHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

There’s only two of us on the team…we think 4 is enough, but a category where other people come in at the end of the comp and clean up and pack up our stuff for a possible award would be fine with us.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO COOK (CAN BE A FAVORITE COMP, BUT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE, CAN BE ANYWHERE)?

So, our favorite place to cook would be any place we get to feed people whether it be family or friends or events etc. It seems most BBQ people we know just love to see smiles on the faces of people and at least for us that’s a huge reason we enjoy cooking. As for favorite competition, while they are all pretty good, we really enjoy the New Holland Summerfest and look forward to it every year. This year we have been fortunate enough to be invited to “The Jack” and of course we hope that will become one of our favorites as well…lol!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE AT A COMPETITION?

Dave likes Yuengling and John is boring and drinks Water or iced tea (please don’t take his BBQ man card!)

ANY COMPETITION SUPERSTITIONS OR SOMETHING YOU CANNOT DO WITHOUT AT A COMPETITION?

No real superstitions, however we do have a music playlist that must be at every comp that most people would think is a strange mix. Everything from Bob Segar, to Weird Al to the Jerky Boys and even includes some 70’s TV theme songs…..don’t judge us!

WHAT IS YOUR GO TO FOOD AFTER A COMPETITION?

    Anything not BBQ…..Chinese is good!

IF YOU WEREN’T COMPETING ALL WEEKEND, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING INSTEAD?

Thinking and talking about competin…as you know it’s a sickness. We are both in our 50’s and have been competing in some form or fashion since we were in our early 20’s…Bass fishing in the 80’s ,90’s and early 2000’s and now this, because Dave saw an ad in the paper about a BBQ Competition in Dover, Delaware…it’s ridiculous, but we wouldn’t want to do anything else.

  4. First Annual Colonial BBQ Competition, New Castle, DE

by Mark Stallard, Slower Lower BBQ

Word started spreading in July 2015 while we were at the BBQ contest in North Wildwood last year that Sandy Fulton was looking to get a new contest going in Battery Park in Old New Castle, Delaware.  Our team Slower Lower BBQ being a Delaware team, are always looking to get on board with any KCBS contests in Delaware.  But this one had us especially excited for a couple of additional reasons.  First, Old New Castle is where my teammate, Mike Jarrell and I first started grilling and BBQing together.  We were neighbors about 25 years ago in this small town and have been close friends since.  Second, I and my teammate Ron Kalmbacher live about 10 minutes from Old New Castle, so this would be right in our backyard.  It’s a win-win, right?

As the contest neared, Mike and I found out we had to work that Friday morning, so Ron stepped up and got all of our gear to the park and managed to get everything setup for us before Mike and I arrived around noon.  First order of business was to crack an adult beverage and go around and say hi to our BBQ family.  The competition grounds were in a grassy, beautifully shady area of the park and the weather was absolutely perfect.  As many of the teams in the Mid-Atlantic will likely remember, the weather so far this year had been miserable, cold and wet.  I think this was one of the first dry, sunny weekends of the season.  Fortunately for us (or perhaps unfortunately) we had managed to not schedule any contests between Harrington in April (where it had rained, sleeted AND snowed) and this contest in June, so we bypassed a lot of that misery.  But we had not managed to get in any cooks in between.

Once everything was settled, we trekked over to Jessop’s Tavern for lunch.  This was an old haunt of mine and Mike’s (it used to be called The Green Frog) when we lived here, so it was great to be back.  Not to mention they have a stellar beer selection!  Then back to the park and it was time to start trimming and prepping the big meats for the overnight cook, along with a little cornhole to pass the time before we fired up the smoker.  Being so close to home, we certainly had our share of friends and family that stopped by to hang out Friday night and this likely attributed to me having more than my fair share of said adult beverages.  Finally, the smoker got fired up and big meats on around midnight and it was time to retire to the RV for a couple hours of sleep.

The traditional Saturday morning good luck MABA shot!

Saturday morning, a little worse for wear and tear, we got the rest of our meats on and everything went through with relative ease and no major events.  More friends stopped by in the morning, we got all of our turn-ins to the judges on time and hoped for the best.  During and after turn-ins, we had live entertainment from local Blues favorites The Bullets and Doctor Harmonica & Rocket 88.  The event organizer had advertised a charitable donation of $5 entry to the contest grounds for the public along with (unbeknownst to many teams) $1 samples of BBQ from the teams.  Right after turn-ins, I decided to start selling and we quickly had a line of what must have been 50-100 people; but I couldn’t see the end of the line, so I’m guessing.  It was great, because we made our money back on meat costs and sold almost all of our left overs.  However, this part was poorly organized and lot of the public left dissatisfied since they were expecting to eat some award winning BBQ and most teams did not participate since they were unaware of this part of the contest.  It was a great idea however and I would like to see the organizer get more consensus from the teams and `maybe charge $2-3 instead.

Awards time finally came around and as Sandy called out the top 10 finishes in each category, there were no Slower Lower BBQ calls for us this weekend.  It was a big weekend for 3 Eyz BBQ though with 3 first place calls and a GC to finish out the contest.  Sauce This BBQ won the RGC and Pigheaded BBQ managed a big 3rd place finish along with Delaware State Champions.  Poor finish aside, we head a great time at the Colonial BBQ in Old New Castle and look forward to another chance to redeem ourselves next year.
